Principal supervisor's assessment

The principal supervisor should take the following points into consideration before deciding if the regular assessment can or cannot be approved as satisfactory:

  • Any documented illness, parental leave, or other approved leaves of absence should be taken into consideration before making the assessment.
  • Has the student written a project summary of 1-5 pages containing the required elements?
  • Consider whether the student has or has not been able to explain the project's background, purpose, and hypotheses in a satisfactory manner, and if the student has or has not an acceptable understanding of the research field in general.
  • Consider whether the student has or has not been able to present, interpret, and discuss the results generated in the project in a satisfactory manner.
  • Consider whether the student has or has not accounted for changes made to the project plan, and if the student has or has not presented a realistic timetable for the next project period.
  • Consider whether the collaboration between the PhD student and the supervisors are working optimal or should be adjusted.
  • Consider if the PhD student has expressed concerns regarding work-life balance that requires attention.
  • Has the PhD student and supervisors discussed a Data Management Plan?
  • If relevant has the PhD student and supervisors discussed possible innovation potential of any research findings so far?
  • Consider whether the student has or has not completed or planned courses according to the PhD plan.
  • Consider whether the student has or has not completed a stay at another research environment, or if plans for the change of environment has or has not been made according to the requirements of spending time in another research environment.
  • Consider whether the student has or has not carried out the planned dissemination activities, and/or if appropriate adjustments to the plan have or have not been agreed upon.
  • Consider whether the PhD student has started the writing process and, if so, if it is progressing satisfactorily.
  • Consider the co-authorships and declarations of co-authorship. Reflect on who should be included and how? Do you have a plan, and do all involved agree?
  • Has the PhD student and supervisors discussed budgetary needs if relevant?
  • Consider whether the student and the supervisor group have or have not revisited the completed expectation alignment sheet, and if not, why has this alignment sheet not been revisited?

After the regular assessment meeting the principal supervisor must assess whether the student is following the PhD plan and inform the Graduate School.
