PhD supervision for co-supervisors
SUND offers a voluntary PhD supervision course for primary co-supervisors and co-supervisors
Who
Primary co-supervisors or co-supervisors, who already supervise PhD students or who will become co-supervisors within the next year.
What
The course combines short presentations by the teachers/facilitators with plenary discussions and group exercises. Presentations by the facilitators will focus on providing a range of research-based tools applicable to the participants' practice.
Duration
The course is structured as a half day course.
PhD supervision for co-supervisors is designed specifically for co-supervisors for PhD students at SUND. The co-supervisors can be employed at SUND or affiliated hospitals, research institutions, private companies etc. Participation is voluntary.
The aim of the course is that participants can:
- Clearly define their role as a co-supervisor and match their effort with their resources
- Use tools to align expectations with the supervisor team
- Analyse power distribution in the team and address disagreements
- Contribute with constructive written feedback
- Optimise the feedback process when several authors are involved
The main purpose of the course is to make co-supervision a more efficient and enjoyable process and improve the overall quality of PhD supervision. At this seminar, you will learn tools to clearly define your role and to align expectations with the PhD student and the rest of the supervisor team.
The course will cover the following topics:
- The co-supervisor role
- Collaboration in the supervisory team
- The feedback process: what is your role?

The course is structured as a 3,5-hour course. The workload is estimated to be around 3,5 hours.
In order to pass the course you need to be actively involved and be present at least 80% of the time.
The course 'PhD supervision: for co-supervisors' will be offered four times per semester.
