Talk for PhD students and PhD supervisors – Generational leadership in academia
Understanding and collaborating across generations
A new talk titled “Generational Leadership in Academia – Understanding and Collaborating Across Generations” invites PhD students and supervisors to explore how diverse generational perspectives shape today’s research environment. With four to five generations working side by side in academia, the session highlights both challenges and opportunities in supervision, collaboration, and motivation.
PhD students often navigate traditions and expectations shaped by older generations, while supervisors support emerging researchers whose needs and working styles may differ significantly. This diversity, organizers emphasize, becomes a strength when actively understood and applied.
Participants will gain insights into:
- How different academic upbringings shape expectations and communication styles
- Why generational mismatches often occur, and strategies to prevent them
- Using generational perspectives as a neutral framework for sensitive discussions
- Leveraging complementary strengths across age groups for smoother collaboration
- Building inclusive, adaptive, and psychologically safe research environments
The session aims to equip both students and supervisors with practical tools to strengthen academic leadership for the future.
