Short description of the thesis
Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer is often not a single event but a recurring disease, requiring patients to undergo repeated procedures and long-term surveillance. This PhD thesis investigates whether office-based 980 nm laser treatment can offer a less invasive alternative to conventional surgery for patients with recurrent low-grade bladder tumors. In a randomized clinical trial, laser treatment achieved results comparable to standard tumor resection, while causing fewer complications, improving short-term quality of life, and being strongly preferred by patients. The thesis also explores how new laser technology with automatic power control have potential to safely expand the treatment area, potentially making laser treatment applicable to a broader group of patients.
