Short description of the thesis
Infective endocarditis is a serious infection of the heart that requires prolonged antibiotic treatment and remains associated with high mortality. While intravenous antibiotics have traditionally been the standard treatment, recent research has shown that selected patients can safely switch to tablets. This PhD thesis investigates how antibiotic treatment can be optimized by studying how drugs are absorbed, distributed, and eliminated in patients with infective endocarditis. Using data from the POET trial, the thesis identifies patient groups at risk of insufficient antibiotic exposure, including those receiving certain drug combinations or with specific bacterial infections. The findings provide new insights that may help tailor antibiotic treatment and improve outcomes for patients with this life-threatening disease.
