Short description of the thesis

Poultry production is expanding rapidly across Kenya and many low-and middle-income countries to meet the growing demand for affordable animal-source foods. This growth had been accompanied by increasing use of antibiotics to prevent and treat disease, raising concerns about antimicrobial resistance- a major global public health threat. my PhD examined antibiotics use in semi-intensive poultry farms in Kenya by tracking farms over multiple production cycles and measuring not only how much antibiotics were used, but also when, how, and whether they were administered appropriately. The findings provide evidence to strengthen antimicrobial stewardship, improve surveillance systems, and inform policies that support sustainable poultry production while protecting animal and public health.
