Short description of the thesis

Enteroviruses may appear to be a historical public health concern, largely because of the profound impact of poliovirus during the twentieth century. However, non-polio enteroviruses continue to cause substantial morbidity. They are a leading cause of aseptic meningitis and account for approximately 40% of viral meningitis cases among Danish adults. Enterovirus infections can also cause severe neonatal disease, including outbreaks of enteroviral myocarditis. Although these associations are well established at the individual level, the population-level burden of enterovirus infections in Denmark remains poorly understood. This PhD defence addresses this knowledge gap through register-based studies and pilot surveillance across six European countries.
