Short description of the thesis
Hyperglycaemia is common among critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units and is associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. This PhD thesis investigates hyperglycaemia in patients with severe acute brain injury, including traumatic brain injury and subarachnoid haemorrhage. The thesis comprises a systematic review comparing restrictive versus liberal blood glucose targets, a retrospective cohort study examining the relationship between blood glucose and cerebral microdialysis glucose, and two clinical studies conducted at the Neurointensive Care Unit at Rigshospitalet. These studies explore the clinical significance of hyperglycaemia, the potential modifying effect of premorbid diabetes, and the short-term physiological effects of hyperglycaemia on cerebral glucose metabolism.
Together, these studies aim to improve the understanding of glucose metabolism after severe acute brain injury.
