Short description of the thesis
Cancer-associated cachexia affects up to half of patients with lung cancer and is characterized by involuntary weight loss, metabolic disturbances, and reduced survival. However, the role of adipose tissue in cachexia remains incompletely understood.
This PhD thesis investigated adipose tissue function in patients with lung cancer using PET/CT imaging and molecular analyses of adipose tissue biopsies. The findings showed that visceral adipose tissue demonstrated disease-specific prognostic relevance based on [¹⁸F]FDG uptake. In addition, cancer-associated cachexia was associated with distinct lipidomic and transcriptional alterations in adipose tissue. These findings provide new insights into adipose tissue remodeling in lung cancer and may support the development of future therapeutic strategies targeting cachexia.
