About The Faculty
Founded in 1479, the Faculty of Health Sciences is renowned for research of outstanding quality and rigorous academic training in a broad range of disciplines. Over the course of its history, researchers at the Faculty of Health Sciences have been awarded four Nobel prizes.
In recent years, the Faculty, which is home to the largest medical and dental schools in Scandinavia, has also become a leading center for biomedical and clinical research. It is located at the heart of the biomedical cluster of Greater Copenhagen and southern Sweden, known as Medicon Valley. This includes other universities in the area, and provides the benefit of being situated adjacent to some of the foremost pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the world. Copenhagen University Hospital, in the same vicinity as the Faculty, provides facilities for clinical training and advanced research.
Independent, basic research plays a pivotal role and we are a major recipient of international, state and regional funds, as well as funds from private foundations, which are essential in supporting our research activities.
The Faculty is organised into 12 specialised departments and our campus grounds also house the national hospital (Rigshospitalet) the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. These are within walking distance of one another and are key to the Faculty's success, since they enable researchers to link projects across institutional borders and disciplines.
"Did you know:
- Over 4,000 students, 850 graduate students, 1000 researchers and employees attend the Faculty each day.
- The Faculty is ranked 15th in Europe "
The main strengths of our research work, thus, lie in the close collaboration that exists between basic and clinical research, the exceptional conditions for translational research and the geographical proximity of relevant players within the health sciences.
