Nordic Pharmacology Prize to Professor Thue W. Schwartz

Nordic Pharmacology Prize

Professor Thue W. Schwartz receives the BCPT Nordic Prize 2017 in Basic & Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology for more than 40 years’ research into molecular pharmacology.

The internationally acclaimed journal BCPT, Basic & Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology has decided to award its annual Nordic prize to Professor Thue W. Schwartz from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research.

In choosing Thue W. Schwartz for the prize the committee focussed on the fact that his career covers a range of impressive activities and his special ability to run cross-disciplinary collaborations, while at the same time being an inspiring mentor to a large number of young researchers.

"Scientific awards mean different things. I am especially pleased and honoured to receive this prize that is awarded within my field of research and teaching, pharmacology, which easily gets tangled up in present-day changing department structures. It is very important that we protect fields like pharmacology, which is of great importance to the training of doctors, just as understanding drugs’ mechanisms of action is vital to developing new drugs, obtaining IPRs and setting up spin-outs

International Top-Class Research that Creates Results
The committee states that Thue W. Schwartz has a unique talent for both conducting leading research and translating his research into successful biotech companies. The committee stresses:

‘Very few researchers are able to combine pharmacological research at the highest international level with business development. Throughout his career Thue W. Schwartz has repeatedly and with never failing energy shown an exceptional talent for conducting research that creates results and is of the highest quality by repeatedly introducing innovative methods and concepts within pharmacology focussing on biotech. He has brilliantly managed to unite molecular mechanistic analysis in vitro, in vivo, transgenic analysis and, through successful collaboration with biotech companies, contribute to the entire “life cycle” of pharmacology – from the laboratory to clinical practice’.

Thue W. Schwartz has published more than 310 scientific articles, obtained numerous patents and received several prestigious prizes including the Jahre Prize (1990), the Lundbeck Prize (1997) and the Novo Nordisk Prize (2001), among others.
