Allan Flyvbjerg Receives the Bagger-Sørensen Prize 2017

CEO of the Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen (SDCC) and Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine Allan Flyvbjerg receives the Bagger-Sørensen Prize 2017 of DKK 500,000 in recognition of his long-time work within diabetes.

CEO and Professor Allan Flyvbjerg is celebrated both for his work as a researcher and as diabetes specialist. For a number of years now he has done research into types 1 and 2 diabetes and the complications that may emerge in the small and large blood vessels as a result of the disease. His research has focussed on well-known complications like blindness, blood clots in the brain, kidney disease and the risk of amputation with a view to developing methods for identifying the diabetes patients with the greatest risk of developing blood vessel damages as a result of the disease. Allan Flyvbjerg has also striven to improve the medical treatment of complications resulting from diabetes.

Next to his clinical work as a diabetes specialist and top management positions, Allan Flyvbjerg has produced an impressive and internationally acknowledged scientific portfolio within diabetes through the years. His research has resulted in around 600 scientific articles and many contributions to national and international volumes, and he is well-cited by both Danish and international colleagues.

Allan Flyvbjerg graduated as a doctor in 1986, obtained his PhD in 1993, became a specialist in medicine and hormone diseases in 1999, chief physician in 2005, clinical professor and department chair in 2009 and dean of Health, Aarhus University in 2010. From 2000-2011 he was president of the Danish Diabetes Association. He has been a member of various boards and councils and received a number of prizes for his scientific work.

Since October 2016 Allan Flyvbjerg has been CEO of SDCC in the Capital Region of Denmark. In the fall of 2016 he joined the Department of Clinical Medicine at SUND, UCPH as clinical professor.

The Bagger-Sørensen Prize 2017 will be presented at a ceremony at Munkebjerg Hotel in Vejle on Monday 4 September 2017.
